St Nicholas, the devil and the angel are as much a part of the Czech Advent season as Christmas carols. On stilts, however, they take on a whole new dimension – they are impossible to miss and immediately capture the attention of children and adults alike.
St Nicholas’s entourage moves amongst the visitors, chatting with the children and evoking the traditional St Nicholas round. A reward awaits the children for reciting a poem or singing a song; the devil, of course, won’t forget to give them a bit of a scare, whilst the angel soothes and delights them.
The programme is based on the Czech St Nicholas tradition, but thanks to the stilts, it takes on a cheerful and striking theatrical form.
St Nicholas’s Entourage
High above the heads of the spectators, beautiful angels appear, bringing magic, smiles and a festive atmosphere to the Advent streets. They walk amongst the visitors, greeting children and adults alike, spreading smiles and, depending on the occasion, handing out little sweets.
The angels can form part of Advent markets and Christmas celebrations, or act as guides for the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree. Their presence lends the whole occasion a fairytale atmosphere and creates a beautiful visual spectacle that really comes into its own after dark.
